Rick Perry’s New Campaign Ad Highlights His Stupidity

In his latest campaign ad, Republican Presidential nominee Rick Perry admits to not being a “slick talker” (no, really?).

I think it’s always good when someone realizes his/her weaknesses, but just because we admit them doesn’t make us a good candidate for the job we are applying (or running) for. I’m a teacher, and if I interviewed for a teaching position and told my hiring committee that I had problems speaking in front of the classroom (which is a requirement for the job), I would expect not to be hired.

Perry thinks that by embracing his incompetence he will endear himself to the voters. After all, he’s promising to balance the budget (something we’ve heard for how many presidential elections now?) and to institute a flat tax. What people need to realize is that in Texas, balancing the budget has meant severely cutting funds appropriated for education in a state that consistently ranks at the bottom nationwide.

His actions as well as his inability to speak should frighten the nation. I don’t wish Rick Perry on Texas much less the rest of nation!

In NC: Republicans Backing Out of Marriage Inequality Amendment

In North Carolina, an anti-gay marriage amendment will go to the polls in May. However, the wording of the amendment has many politicians worried and even regretting their support of the amendment, as reported on ThinkProgress.

The amendment, as it is currently drafted, states that it will “provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” However, the wording that prevents the state from “prohibit[ing] businesses from offering benefits to domestic partners, isn’t included on the ballot.”

Without that final sentence, politicians such as Republican State Senator Jim Davis are fearful of what the amendment might lead to as he said here:

I have a lot of libertarian in me. I believe firmly, passionately that a marriage should be defined as being between one man and one woman. But I also believe with all my heart that in a free America people who choose to live a different lifestyle should have a legal right to do so. Just don’t call it marriage. [This amendment will] restrict their freedoms a little more beyond my comfort zone.”

While I must give politicians like Davis some credit for realizing the epic failure of this amendment, I find the last sentence of his quote still rather troublesome. It’s okay to restrict freedoms of Americans as long as it’s within his comfort zone? It seems to me that we shouldn’t be restricting civil freedoms at all!

But the damage has been done. The amendment is on the ballot and extreme religious groups (i.e. NOM) have jumped on the bandwagon to get this amendment passed in North Carolina.

Now, we can only hope that the voters in the state will see the same flaws the proponents who helped pass the amendment now see.

Another Thing Rick Perry Doesn’t Know: The Voting Age

Rick Perry continues to be a shining beacon for all Texans. While he has already given us several gems of his ignorance, such as not knowing the century of the American Revolution, Perry added a new flaming hot mess to his pile as reported on Joe.My.God.

During a speech Perry was giving at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, Perry made the following comments to the audience:

Those of you that will be 21 by Nov. 12th, I ask for your support and your vote. Those of you who won’t be — just work hard — because you are going to inherit this and you’re counting on us to get this right. The idea that you’re looking at a $15-trillion debt, that you’re looking at entitlement programs that will not be there for you if we continue on this path, is not fair to you and it’s not right.”

Apparently, Perry thinks the voting age and the legal drinking age are both 21. I hope to God that Perry continues to slip in the polls because this man is simply too stupid for prime time!

NOM Loses in Iowa

A few weeks back, I posted that the anti-gay group the National Organization for Marriage funneled funds into the Iowa special senate election. They were hoping to decrease the democratic majority by backing Republican candidate Cindy Golding. Click here to read that post.

I’m pleased to report that the Iowa voters were too smart for their shenanigans! Democratic candidate Liz Mathis won the election by “a healthy 55% of the vote” as reported by ThinkProgress.

In response, NOM pouts by blaming the woman who they once supported by calling Golding “a weak candidate.”

Instead of blaming the woman, I think NOM needs to take a good, hard look at itself. Gay marriage wasn’t even an issue in Iowa until NOM made it one. Their interference and their hate campaigns turned Iowa voters away from Golding. Had NOM kept its trap shut and not interfered with the election, Golding might have had more of a fighting chance.

Still, I’m not complaining. I enjoy watching someone (like NOM) drown in its own hateful bile.

Ron Paul: “Government Has No Business in Private Lives”

Ron Paul, Republican Presidential hopeful, recently gave an interview to Iowa State Daily, where the topics of gay rights and gays in the military came up.

When asked about gay rights, Paul had this to say:

You know I just, I don’t think of people in little groups like that. I don’t think of people as ‘gay’ here and ‘black people’ there, or ‘women’ over here…Everybody is an individual person and everybody has the same rights as anyone else. The government has no business in your private life, you know, so if one person is allowed to do something so should everyone else. The whole gay marriage issue is a private affair and the federal government has no say.”

It’s nice to hear a Presidential candidate (even if he’s not the most popular) go on record stating that all people, including homosexuals, have the right to do what they please in their private lives. Paul is keenly aware that an individual’s private life should not be subject to federal government scrutiny or legislation. Labels based on sexuality, race, and gender have no meaning when it comes to governmental rule.

Amen!

When asked about how he would address gays in the military if he became president, Paul thoughtfully made the following reply:

Well, like I said, everybody has the same rights as everybody else, so homosexuals in the military isn’t a problem. It’s only if they’re doing things they shouldn’t be, if they’re disruptive. But there’s … men and women getting into trouble with each other too. And there’s a lot more heterosexuals in the military, so logically they’re causing more trouble than gays. So yes, you just have the same rules for everybody and treat them all the same.”

Once again, Paul sees the situation for what it is. Gay service members make up a fraction of the military; homosexuals are a minority, after all. Therefore, the problems in the military can’t be squarely blamed on a DADT repeal. It’s just as ridiculous to say that gay marriage threatens traditional marriage when heterosexuals alone have caused the divorce rate to skyrocket.

Unlike Santorum, who continues to spout crap, crap, and more crap or Cain who’s also known for making some idiotic claims, Paul’s words show that his decisions are not based on prejudice or hate. That’s the kind of individual who should be leading the nation because he will govern for every citizen, not just those who are the most like him.

Santorum: No Consensual Sexual Activity Allowed

Once again, Rick Santorum opens his mouth and crap comes spewing out. His toilet must be jealous of the waste it’s not collecting!

ThinkProgress reports that in an interview on a conservative radio show Santorum said, “he still opposes the Supreme Court’s landmark 2003 Lawrence decision, which struck down … legislation” that criminalized sodomy.

He continued to add more steaming hot pies to his pile, when he said, “We can’t do this, we can’t have a constitutional right to consensual sexual activity, no matter what it is.”

Are you kidding me? Does he even know what he’s saying?

He is basically spouting that there should be no rights to consensual sex. Does that mean all sex between two consenting adults should be criminalized? Will straight people getting their freak on now be in danger of being sent to prison in Santorum’s America? After all, there’s no right “to consensual sexual activity.”

Obviously, this man makes no sense, and he wants to be President? Please!

This man needs to just stop talking and go away.

Dan Savage to Cain: Some Proof Being Gay Isn’t a Choice

As you no doubt already know, Herman Cain, Republican Presidential hopeful, believes homosexuality is a choice as well as a sin.

Well, Dan Savage, author, journalist, and editor, wants to provide Cain with scientific evidence that being gay isn’t a choice. I think his experiment is genius and will solve the argument once and for all.

Dan Savage posted the following on The Slog:

Dear Herman,

If being gay is a choice, show us the proof. Choose it. Choose to be gay yourself. Show America how that’s done, Herman, show us how a man can choose to be gay. Suck my dick, Herman. Name the time and the place and I’ll bring my dick and a camera crew and you can suck me off and win the argument.

Very sincerely yours,

Dan Savage

If Cain is able to oblige Savage’s request, then homosexuality can certainly be a choice. However, no straight man, who truly loves lady parts, is going to stop petting his favorite kitty in order to walk someone else’s dog.

Savage knows that, I know that, you know that. Hopefully, when Cain reads this, he will know it too!

Herman Cain: Homosexuality Washes Off

ThinkProgress reported that in an interview with Piers Morgan on CNN Presidential Republican front runner Herman Cain still believes that homosexuality is both a sin and a choice. In fact, during the interview Cain once again reiterated that he has seen no science to disprove his belief, despite the fact that the American Psychological Association says that it is not. They have many studies (AKA science) to back them up.

In fact, “when Morgan pushed him that race and sexual orientation were comparable, Cain explained that race is different because it ‘doesn’t wash off.'”

I don’t know about you, but I’ve taken many showers and not once have I emerged as a heterosexual (even when I tried to force it before coming out). Cain continues to reside quite happily in his ignorance and prejudice and is unwilling to accept the many documented studies by an august medical association, such as the APA. To claim that a section of the American public, whom he wants to govern, can simply change their sexual orientation by showering is preposterous.

Just as taking a shower won’t cleanse Cain of his prejudice, a good scrub won’t make me (or any other gay individual) straight.

Here’s the interview if you want to see it.

Santorum: I’m Like Abraham Lincoln

As mentioned on Unicorn Booty, Rick Santorum, Republican Presidential hopeful, equated his fight against gay marriage to Abraham Lincoln’s stance against slavery.

Apparently incensed by fellow candidate Herman Cain’s refusal to support a national ban on gay marriage, Santorum issued the following response:

I have been a long-time advocate for states’ rights. However, I believe as Abraham Lincoln did – that states don’t have the rights to legalize moral wrongs…Mr. Cain, Congresswoman (Michele) Bachmann and Governor (Rick) Perry all believe 50 different definitions of marriage is fine, I strongly disagree and will continue fighting for traditional marriage between one man and woman.

It appears Santorum has a skewed perception of reality and himself!

Abraham Lincoln refused to let the nation be torn apart by prejudice and hate. Yes, the south wanted to continue slavery, and the slave states fought to keep the right to own human beings as property. Lincoln knew better. Owning another person was just plain wrong. He wouldn’t allow the atrocity to continue, and he wasn’t about to let his country be torn apart by those who thought they knew better.

Santorum is no Abraham Lincoln. His fight against gay marriage doesn’t side him with Lincoln (whose statue would rise from the Lincoln Memorial to squash him like a bug if it could). If Santorum wants to make comparisons to the issues that helped bring about Civil War in America, then his stance would align him with the slave states, not with Lincoln!

Like the slave states of Lincoln’s time, Santorum (and others like him) wish to continue to deprive a segment of the American population of their civil rights. Like the slave states, Santorum sanctions the creation of second class citizens. Like the slave states viewed Africans brought to this country against their will, Santorum views homosexuals as unclean and immoral.

And, since history has a way of repeating itself, like the slave states, Santorum will fall!
